Queen Elizabeth Health Centre Rooftop garden

The container garden is a project of Biotop-AAC, a company set up by Valiquette and the agriculture department to find commercial applications. The garden produced more than 113 kilograms of fresh fruit and vegetables in it’s first year and the food produced goes to a food security NGO, the N.D.G. Food Depot.

The efficient container system has the potential to produce one tonne of fresh vegetables on a 2,000 sq. ft. flat roof. The roof-top is a modest demonstration project of 60 lightweight containers, 40 with vegetables, herbs or fruits. The other 20 contain roses, lantana and other flowers attractive to pollinating insects.

It has become clear that the roof is an ideal growing environment, with full sun exposure and clear of the usual garden pests.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a pilot project to test the productivity of the container system. The project is a success and it is proved to be space efficient as well as light weight, so can be used on almost any flat roof space.
