FUI proposes a precise set of spatio-functional components intended as guidelines for the consideration of all potential aspects of contribution to urban quality: a productive core, transitional spaces, tentacles, porous access, integrated activity spaces, corridors, productive pockets, view points, exchange infrastructure and adjacent urban fabric. FUI components ensure and facilitate close contact between agricultural and urban uses which carries strong potential to reinforce identity and connectedness, especially given the fact that many urban societies have all but lost their rural identities and agricultural relationships. Consequently by integrating agro-urban components into renovated or new neighborhoods FUI seeks to inverse the phenomenon of social and agro- environmental disconnect so as to relink those two basic elements that are threatened in the current urban context: food cultivation and the sense of belonging to place and community.
