Food production is considered as one among many other objectives in aiming to achieve new urban quality. It is balanced with other imperatives relating to spatial configurations and notions of urbanity. The design team visualizes the various scenarios with their compromises and constraints, and balances the competing interests such as, for instance, cultivation and solar panels or water retention on rooftops, or cultivation and other open space uses on the ground plane. The urban design approach is based on an iterative process in which design ideas are tested through drawing and adjusted as the design evolves. It aims at producing the best array of designs so as to illustrate a variety of solutions which can be compared with one another.
